True Plasma FAQ

What is True Plasma and how does it work?

True Plasma is the fourth state of matter (solid, liquid, gas, PLASMA) and is the most abundant form of matter in the universe. Forms are naturally occurring (lightning) as well as artificially engineered (plasma television.). The term "plasma" was coined by a chemist in the 1920s when comparing it's behavior to blood plasma in that it carries ionized atomic nuclei in the same way that blood plasma is a vital delivery medium in our bodies. Some physicists today call it "ionized gas."  High temperature thermal plasmas have been used in surgeries for over 30 years and research on thermal plasma applications for skin rejuvenation date back to as early as 2007.

There are essentially two types of plasma; thermal/hot and non-thermal/cold. The LUXEPlaxel True Plasma pen artificially generates both thermal and non-thermal true plasma (not electrical) inside the pen by applying a strong electrical charge to a neutral gas (oxygen) in a proprietary method similar to the Tesla Coil and exclusive to LUXEPlaxel. True plasma is created when the pen's tip charges the air between itself and your skin. This controlled arc of plasma energy causes sublimation or "vaporization" of the epidermis at the contact point turning the tissue directly into a gas and creating a small carbon crust. This action essentially creates a controlled injury causing the skin to immediately contract, tighten and heal while avoiding any direct invasion or heating the deeper layers of skin increasing the risk of scarring. The needle never touches the skin.  The result is tightened, resurfaced skin stimulated to produce new collagen and elastin naturally. The LUXEPlaxel True Plasma Pen is a medical-grade device designed specifically for precision plasma treatments on delicate facial areas as well as the rest of the body.

What skin concerns can plasma treatments address?

Plasma treatments are highly versatile. Common concerns treated include:

  1. Upper and lower eyelid hooding (non-surgical blepharoplasty)
  2. Fine lines and wrinkles
  3. Loose or crepey skin
  4. Acne scars, stretch marks, and surgical scars
  5. Skin tags, milia, and minor benign lesions
  6. Overall skin resurfacing and texture improvement

How is the Plaxel Pen different from other plasma devices?

The biggest difference in the LUXEPlaxel Plasma Pen and others is the creation of True Plasma.  It generates actual ionized plasma energy, unlike many "plasma pens" on the market that use a very high voltage electric current to put out an electric arc which can cause scarring and function more like arc or fibroblast devices.  The direct current of this pen sends the plasma energy into the targeted skin cells and does not affect the surrounding tissue.  Other pens damage surrounding tissue and can cause pitted scars or other lasting damage.  You can distinguish True Plasma by it's violet color and ozone smell.  Sometimes there can be a slight charring smell from the sublimation of solid cell matter and evaporation of cytoplasm as well.  LUXEPlaxel True Plasma Pen offers a far more controlled, consistent energy delivery, reducing the risk of uneven results or unintended thermal damage. At ALISON KAE AESTHETICS, we use the LUXEPlaxel specifically because of its precision, safety profile, and proven clinical outcomes.

Is the treatment painful?

Most clients describe the sensation as a mild pinching or heat at the treatment points. A topical numbing cream is applied for 30–45 minutes before the session begins, which significantly reduces discomfort for most people. Sensitivity varies by area — the eyelids tend to be more sensitive than other regions. We take our time and prioritize your comfort throughout the entire process.

How long does a treatment session take?

Appointment times can vary greatly depending on the size of the area being treated.  There will be a numbing period of at least 20 minutes, the treatment itself, and post-care instructions. The treatment is tedious and precise and can take well over two hours in the example of a full face or neck treatment.  During longer treatments either or both client and practitioner may need to pause periodically.  An approximate timeframe can be discussed at your consultation after your individual treatment is assessed.

What should I expect immediately after the treatment?

Immediately after, you will notice tiny dark "carbon dots" (scabs) at each plasma point, along with redness and some swelling — particularly around the eye area, which can be significant for the first 2–3 days. This is completely normal and expected. The dots will naturally flake off within 5–10 days. You should plan for some social downtime during the healing phase.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients achieve excellent results in 1–2 sessions. More advanced laxity or deep scarring may benefit from 2–3 sessions or more spaced at least 8–12 weeks apart to allow full healing between treatments. During your consultation, we'll assess your skin and create a personalized treatment plan with realistic expectations, sometimes combined with other treatments if applicable. For ongoing skin health and improvement maintenance, regular treatments are beneficial to keep imperfections at bay and consistently keep your skin in top shape.

What does the healing process look like?

Healing generally follows this timeline:

  1. Days 1–3: Swelling, redness, and carbon dots visible. Eye area may be puffy.
  2. Days 4–7: Swelling subsides; dots begin to dry and darken.
  3. Days 7–10: Dots naturally flake off — do not pick or force removal. This will cause scarring!
  4. Weeks 2–4: Pink, fresh skin underneath. Skin continues to tighten.
  5. Months 1–3: Collagen remodeling continues; full results visible by 3 months.

What aftercare products or steps are required?

Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing. Key guidelines include:

  1. Keep the area clean and dry; avoid touching or rubbing
  2. Apply the provided healing products as directed. Additional aftercare can be purchased for short or long-term use.
  3. Avoid makeup over treated areas until dots have fully fallen off. Specialized healing concealer is available absolutely necessary and can be worn after 24 hours, however, several days of social downtime is strongly recommended if treatment is on the face or you must wear tight clothing over the treatment area.
  4. Stay out of direct sun and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily for three months after treatment and ideally at all times.
  5. Avoid swimming pools, saunas, and heavy sweating for 2 weeks.
  6. Do not use retinoids, AHAs, or active exfoliants until fully healed.

Is there a risk of hyperpigmentation or scarring?

When performed by a trained professional and with proper aftercare, the risk of lasting side effects is low. A thorough consultation is essential — we assess your skin type and tailor the treatment settings accordingly. Sun protection during healing is critical to preventing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Scarring is rare but possible if dots are picked or post-care instructions are not followed.

When will I see results and how long will they last?

You'll notice initial tightening fairly quickly, but full results emerge at 8–12 weeks as collagen remodeling completes. Results are long-lasting — typically 2–5 years — because the treatment creates real structural change in the skin. However, the natural aging process continues, so maintenance treatments may be desired over time. Results vary by individual, area treated, and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and skincare habits.

Who is an ideal candidate for plasma treatment?

Ideal candidates are adults with mild to moderate skin laxity who are looking for a non-surgical alternative to procedures like eyelid surgery or facelifts. You are a good candidate if you are in good general health, have realistic expectations, and are willing to commit to the healing process and aftercare. Plasma treatment is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active skin infections or eczema in the treatment area, have a pacemaker, have a history of keloid scarring, or are on certain medications. A test patch will be administered if there is any question about adverse or uncertain effects.  Please schedule a free consultation to discuss whether plasma treatment is right for you!

Can plasma treatments be combined with other services?

Yes — plasma treatments complement many other aesthetic services offered at Alison Kae Aesthetics, including paramedical micropigmentation and microchanneling treatments. Combining services is done strategically and with appropriate spacing to ensure the skin is fully healed. We'll discuss any combination approach during your consultation to build a plan that best supports your overall goals.
